Despite the book having been here for a long time now, its relevance is more than ever. Dale Carnegie has provided us with all types of worries that we face in our daily life. Be it getting worried about failing your exams or getting fired from your job. The book outlines all their causes and then gives us the ways to deal with them. In the last section, Carnegie has written about the experiences of real people on how they conquered their worry habits.
1. Worrying never solves the problem. It only adds onto it
As human beings, we are bound to worry. We worry about countless things. How do I speak in front of 100 people tomorrow!? I haven’t studied for my tomorrow’s exams, what to do now!? I wasn’t aware that I spent 4 hours on social media!! It’s already 4 AM, yet I cannot sleep. Panic! Panic! Panic!!!
These were a few worry traps that you may have experienced. Think about your own situations when you had worried a lot. Has worry ever solved your problem? Worry only expanded your problem, didn’t it?
Carnegie argues that we waste a lot of time thinking about our problems. We think of all the terrible consequences we could face in our problems. We rarely think about the solution part.
When faced with insomnia, we check our clock constantly. We then think all the bad things that could happen the following day due to lack of sleep. At that moment, we all know that forgetting about everything and falling asleep is the most crucial task to do. Yet, we fail to do that.

2. Break your worrying habit before it breaks you
When we repeatedly do something, it becomes our habit. Worrying is also a vicious habit that we have learned throughout our lifetime. The roots of our worrying habits lie so deep that we can’t even look back.
Instead of tackling our issue logically, we tend to worry further. When we worry more, we continue building on our worrying habit. The vicious cycle keeps going on.
It’s a bad habit just like anything else – smoking, excessive drinking, or sleeping late.
Carnegie stated that around fifty percent of all hospital cases are related to worry. Can you believe that? Me neither!
Worry not only breaks our mentality, but it also attacks our physical health. When we worry, we don’t feel like doing anything. We don’t eat well nor do we exercise properly.
In fact, worry nearly killed the richest person of the 19th century. Yes, I am talking about John D. Rockefeller. He used to worry so much during his 50s that his face had turned into a very old man. The doctors prescribed him to restrict his food habits and encouraged him to engage in physical activities. They warned him that if he continues to worry, he might well be dead shortly. Not willing to die, he followed the prescribed guidelines. He lived till 98.

3. “How I conquered worry?”
There was a special section mentioned in the book on “How I conquered worry?”. Carnegie has described the worry experiences of real people, and how they dealt with it. There were some unique stories in it such as ‘I learned to stop worrying by watching my wife wash dishes’ and ‘I was warned not to try to speak or to move even a finger’.
These stories were of everyday people like you and me. They faced similar problems like us. Personally speaking, it was enlightening to learn how these people were able to conquer their worries. From this inspiration, I was able to build up a proper daily routine amid this coronavirus. A lot of these people had unknowingly used the techniques provided by Carnegie in the book.
One thing was sure – all these people used simple techniques to conquer their worries that you and I can also apply in our life. Mind you, they were “simple”, but not “easy”.
